masterpieces

Some days just turn out better than others. I'm learning to accept that as a fact of life. It doesn't matter how well I plan or how hard I try, at any given moment life can spin out of control. That would describe today. Not my worst day by a long shot, but still not the way I had envisioned it. This is just an example of my average "the horse ran away with the wagon day!"

I had a lot I wanted to get done today, but I wanted to make sure my kids had a good day too so I called and arranged for two cousins to come play. Usually I find that when my kids have someone over to play with they require a little less of me not the case today. They went room to room dumping toys without much interest in playing with them. They just "wanted to see what was in them." Then I suggested that they try playing outside which worked for about 10 min. at which point they started the in and out game that drives a mom crazy in and of itself. Only added to the constant opening and closing of the sliding glass door were smudges of dog poop across the carpet. Did I mention how much I hate cleaning up dog poop! (Not really a dog lover to begin with). While cleaning up dog poop, the phone rang, and it was a really good friend who I hadn't spoken with in almost a month so I got a little distracted. Meanwhile my baby was fussy and needing some extra love and attention. While carrying on my conversation, I took the baby into his room to play with him and shut the door. I then remembered that the sheets (a child wet the bed last night) should be about done and I needed to start another batch. So I began gathering up all of the laundry upstairs when my 4 year old nephew nonchalantly met me in my room to ask if he could paint. With finger poised to my lips begging for quiet because I was still trying to have a catch up conversation with my friend, I whisper the words "wait just a minute". I watch him walk off to my boys' room while I grab the rest of the laundry and walk downstairs. This is what I see (minus the two cousins who I allowed to move out of the "mugshot" to protect their identity). They had already been painting. . . . .I guess the "asking for permission" was an afterthought!

Dolly makeover

These pictures don't show the kitchen floor with paint drips and cute footprints leading onto the carpet! Who new 10 bottles of paint could do so much damage! And this was all before 11:00 a.m.

Between dog poop and fingerpaint, you were really in for a clean up today, huh? You made me laugh-- needed that today. Thanks!

Hi Rachelle! I just tracked down your blog...just in time to read about your fun day:)

This post reminded me of the "Give a Pig a Pancake" or "Give a Mouse a Cookie" books. If it's not one thing, it's another!

Syd painted the bottom of her feet once (on purpose) and put cute little footprints everywhere. Don't worry...I got pictures of that too!

Yeah, um again...sorry about that! Kids know when you are distracted and know just how to take advantage of that!

It is astounding how much damage can be done in such a short amount of time!
I am glad to know that I am not the only one who feels at times that my most valiant of efforts do not always result in a productive or smooth day.
By the way, I am not a big fan of dogs either. (Although I'm sure I have told you that) If I never had to clean up another piece of dog poop again it would be too soon. I feel bad admitting that I'm not a pet person because people always feel that their animal is part of their family.
Oh, and a question: did they get paint all over the carpet, too? If so, how on earth did you clean it up?

I sure do enjoy reading your narratives!!! you write so very well! It's always interesting to see what actually happens in a day when you are off making other plans. :) I relate.

You are a better mother than I am to even have paint in the house! I even outlaw play-dough. Which my mom has informed me is stifling their creativity but oh well! It seems like we live with little tornados instead of children. Cute post!
