I Love this picture of Waylan. This was taken at Mt. Wheeler 5 years ago just before his first birthday. He has always been so athletic and strong, and yet has the lowest pain tolerance of any of my kids, kind of ironic.
Waylan earned the name Rooster very early in life because he is always the first one up. When he was about three he started to do the rooster crow to get everyone else up too. Sometimes at 5:00a.m. you could hear this little, "Cock a cock a doodle doo!!" He has had sleeping issues since the day he was born. I can laugh about this now, but he was 2 1/2 years old before he ever slept through the night. Yes, that is years not months. He was very colicky as a new born and cried all the time. We figured he took his name literally and "wailed" all the time. Just about the time his colic got better he started with chronic ear infections this continued until at 9 months they finally put tubes in his ears. This had to be followed up with a second surgery 7 months latter when they took out his adnoids and put a second set of tubes in. He has also struggled with breathing issues and had to have his tonsils out earlier this year. He has always been such a particular child too. He has a strong personality and has always wanted things his way. We have a family joke that Waylan always wanted to be an only child so God threw him smack dab in the middle of six. I have at times marvelled that we continued having children with how hard Waylan was; it must be all of the wonderful things about him that I haven't mentioned yet. Waylan has always known how to get attention. With his contagious smile, big blue eyes, red curly hair, and snow white skin he has always caught the attention of strangers. . . they always want to touch him. He also has a fun personality with a great sense of humor. He has always been so creative in his speech and says the funniest things. He is very explosive by nature and fits the "red head" stereotype, but he is also the most sensitive, kind, loving, soft child. He is great with babies and small children and the first to recognize when someone is hurt or sad. My favorite thing of all is illustrated by his answer to my question, "Waylan for your birthday what do you want the most? It could be a toy or clothes or something fun you want to do or your favorite food. What is most important?" He thought for a moment and said, "I want a clean house and toys!" Oh be still my heart. A clean house. This is always my standard answer when my kids ask me what I want for my birthday or mother's day or any other special occasion. Waylan is always my right hand man when it comes to cleaning. He rarely complains and does an excellent job! Unfortunately for him, because he is so good at it I ask him to help maybe a bit more than the other children. I could continue on and on about the many memories that flood my mind about him, but I will just suffice it to say that he is worth every sleepless night I spent holding and rocking, worth all of the worry, concern, and infinite doctors' bills. Rooster I love you! Thank you for being a part of our family. I hope your next year of life fullfills all of your expectations!

He and his brothers are really into Star Wars right now so can you guess the theme of his party?
We took the kids out of school a little early to go to the Rec. center pool. This is one of Waylan's favorite places in the summer time.
We also got to take his cousin Katie who is here visiting from Michigan as well as two neighbor friends.

Happy Birthday Waylan! There is no one I'd rather share a birthday with! Sad we missed your party this year. I remember those first months with Wailing Waylan. I would leave from babysitting and wonder how you did it ALL the time Rachelle. You are an amazing mother and so patient.
Happy Birthday little guy! You are such a fun and wonderful kid! You make me smile every time I see you! I truly can't believe you are six!
I love Waylan. He is so special and sweet! I am one of those people who always wants to touch his fiery hair. Poor guy, I didn't realize it was an epidemic. I'll TRY to restrain myself in the future...
What a great tribute to a cute little boy! It sounds like he is ready for whatever life throws at him, just like his mom. Happy Birthday!
